How to Disable Firefox’s Drag-to-Pin Tab Feature

Mozilla Firefox recently introduced the ability to pin a tab by dragging it to the far left of the tab bar. While this may sound convenient, many users have found it disruptive — especially when trying to rearrange tabs. It’s all too easy to mis-drag and accidentally pin a tab you didn’t mean to.

Unfortunately, in the current mainstream releases of Firefox, there isn’t an official toggle or a simple about:config preference to completely turn off this behavior. That gap has sparked plenty of discussion (and frustration) within the Firefox community.

If you’ve run into this issue, don’t worry — there’s a workaround available for Firefox Nightly and the Dev channel.

Workaround for Firefox Nightly or Dev channel

To use this fix, make sure you’re on Firefox version 144.0b5 or newer, since that’s when the relevant setting was introduced.

Now, before we dive in, a quick clarification:

• This doesn’t technically disable the drag-to-pin feature.
• What it does is increase the delay before a tab gets pinned when you drag it, which makes accidental pinning practically impossible.

Here’s how to set it up:

1. Open about:config
2. Search browser.tabs.dragDrop.pinInteractionCue.delayMS
3. Change the value from 500 to a higher number (for example, 900000 for 15 minutes), which effectively disables the feature.

With this tweak in place, the drag-to-pin action is effectively disabled, since you’d have to hold a tab against the left edge for an absurd amount of time before it would pin. Hopefully, in the future, the Mozilla team will provide an official option to fully disable this feature, instead of relying on increasing the delay.
